Sleeping Beauty in Red Stilettos

I just got an email from Rebecca, the poetry editor at TOTU (Tales of the Unanticipated) saying she wants a poem of mine entitled "Sleeping Beauty in Red Stilettos." I wrote this about seven years ago and have been tweaking it since then. I am really glad to have found a home for this piece. Not only is it one of my favorites, but it has been challenging finding the right place for a poem that blends fairy tales and strip clubs.

I wrote the poem after watching one of Cinemax' episodes of "Real Sex" which interviewed several professional dancers who tour throughout the U.S. What struck me while watching the show was that all of the women seemed very lonely. Because of their constant travel and occupation, most were unable to maintain long-term relationships.

I am both fascinated and repulsed by the objectification of people. As a theme, it is one that I frequently revisit in my writing. If you have never heard of TOTU, definitely check it out.
